Untitled - By: Adiana Tomei

People say

To seize the day

But the sun’s already set along the horizon

Because the moon and stars

They shine so bright

So I will always

Seize the night.

People say that darkness

Is an abyss

Of nothingness

But nothing is something

And something could be anything you want.

Because it is what

Comes after the day

That mesmerizes me.

Look to the stars

The answers you will see.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The meaning of this poem is that sometimes what seems to the dark things in life, are actually the most beautiful things in life. Sometimes all you need is to look around yourself and take in the world around you, as sometimes the most untypical things are the most enchanting things you’ll see.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

To me, I don’t really have a thought process, or a way to explain my writing. When writing a poem, I write whatever comes to mind, on any topic. So, I don’t really have a way of describing it very well.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I chose to write this poem because the idea came to my mind, and I felt the urge to write it. Writing poems is the way I express myself, so I choose to write whatever I feel. I chose to write this poem based on the phrase “ don’t judge a book by its cover “, and how so many kids are or have been at one point afraid of the dark. While on the contrary, you just need to take another look at things.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?

Make sure to write down your ideas, thoughts or emotions, it will lead you to some deep and emotional poems, which personally, make me feel good to see them written down.
