Upon the fallen leaves, falls the new seasons snow
Where children once played upon, watching them grow
Yet now a gust of wind, comes to blow them all away
And now the leaves are led to a brand new ground to lay
Goodbye autumn, I’ll remember your warm little leaves
I’ll miss the problem of simply having to wear longer sleeves
As now the raging winter comes, a great violent crash
For the wind blows them everywhere as they dance around and thrash
Don’t cry autumn, I won’t forget your warm wavy lakes
Before they became overpowered with winters frosty flakes
but now your water must turn to ice, there’s nothing yet to worry
Soon when spring comes the winter will lose its chilly flurry
And then will come summer, awaiting autumn yet again
And I will sit in my chair writing with my poets pen
A new poem, one about the loss of the suns shine
And how the coming Autumn will just be perfectly fine
Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.
Farewell to Autumn is about the cyclical nature of the seasons. We all await excitedly for the coming of our favourite season, as we too must mourn it when the next season must come along. This poem emphasizes, how Autumn is not forever, yet it is a fleeting moment which is even more beautiful than status. It makes every moment, and every leaf even more special, knowing that it will soon be covered with snow.
Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.
Sitting in my room, I watched the first snow fall, and admired it covering the leaves. At first, I too mourned the death of 2025’s Autumn, yet I felt reassured, knowing it would be coming back again. It made me reminisce the memories I made that Autumn and how Autumn that year was like none other; something I would not have been able to do if Autumn was year round.
Why did you choose to write this poem?
I chose to write Farewell to Autumn, as Autumn is a well like season, as well as the bittersweet feeling of the arrival of new snow, leaving Autumn in the past. I want to reassure Autumn-lovers, that our sadness is a Winter-lovers joy, as when Summer comes to an end, Autumn will return again.
Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?
Think of a main idea first, then metaphors, then a clear thought out message and structure.
