The Sound of Love - By: Almaz Berhane

the sound of love is the recording of our music saved onto my phone

you play the guitar and I sing

the sound of love is the fact that you did not know I was recording

and how the only ears to grace this melody are mine

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The Sound of Love is a poem based on an experience surrounding my first love. It is as simple as that, a little glimpse into our relationship at the time of the event in the poem, which now looking back on it, was a year ago. The meaning is to discuss the intimate and almost secretive nature of love, or having a crush on someone.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

My thought process was to just get my emotions out, that's usually how I start all my poems--with a feeling. I do not have a definite writing process but I typically try to keep my poems on the shorter side as a preference.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I already answered this in previous questions, but to get my emotions out. I have a couple of poems written about my first love, they are not all dedicated to him but rather just exist to prove that I did have feelings, to validate my experience and connect with others.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?

My biggest tip is to always practice, practice, practice! Everyone starts somewhere and you won't become a better poet if you don't keep writing. Set up a challenge for yourself maybe, like to write a poem everyday or every week. As cliche as it sounds--never give up.
