Prisons of Thoughts - By: Julien Mudry Danisch

A doubt is platemail armor rank and dark.

An outfit of sure, steely stricture thwarts.

A tree, bedaubed with heavy, twisted bark.

A dismal, dingy cell of inky quartz.

A figure draped in dour, shifting shadows.

It wears a hood of mumbles, and stands tall.

In darkened realms, a hopeful heart hollows.

A person robbed of action fails to crawl.

Doubt’s whispers stir internal storms of strife.

Whoosh, bang! Its thunder crush’s faith in the heart.

The rumors sown by rivals are now rife;

Stabbing into oneself like a lead dart.

Yet through the haze we seek the guiding light,

To quell the whispers and kill anxious plight.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

My poem "Prisons of Thought" explores the theme of doubt as a restrictive force on one's thoughts and actions. I depicted doubt as heavy armor, twisted bark, and shifting shadows, trapping individuals in a dismal and dingy mental state. Despite the internal storms of strife caused by doubt, there is a yearning to find advice and clarity, symbolized by the guiding light to overcome anxious thoughts and regain faith in oneself.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

My writing process for this poem involves using vivid imagery and metaphors to represent doubt as a restrictive force on thoughts and actions. I employed the Shakespearean sonnet structure and most of the poem was written in iambic pentameter.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I chose to write this poem because I frequently feel self-doubt that slows me down in my actions and goals. I though that self-doubt would also be a relatable topic, as it is a common emotion especially among young people. I was also required to write this poem as a part of an assignment at school.
