Forgiveness - By: Tarin Evans-Tokaryk

Art thou malign as I dare to presume?

Thy motives curse my name while I'm afar,

Thy whispers keep her locked up in thy gloom,

You're like a creeping knife left out to scar.

Thy Influence is nothing but a curse,

When gone she’ll be adrift out on the road,

You’ll leave behind a song without a verse,

Thy words are like the croaking of a toad.

Art thou malign as I dare to believe?

My heart forgot its purpose was to Live,

Might not the love of man work to deceive?

My heart forgot its work was to forgive.

Art thou malign? I would not say of thee,

I have been blinded through my hate of thee.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

This poem covers one's mental journey through the path of forgiveness. The poem begins with a narrative projecting hateful feelings toward someone who has wronged the author. Throughout the poem, the author realizes that the other person is human with human faults and that they will only further ruin their own life if they dwell upon the past wrongdoings of others.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

This poem came straight from the heart and only involved one draft written over the course of one hour.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

The idea of forgiveness worked perfectly with the format of the sonnet, something that has been a topic in my English class recently.
