There’s something about blue
Something that highlights the hue
Blue, it’s always true isn’t it
They call it sky blue
I think it’s the slide of
The ocean
Blue, it’s always deep
So deep, that your hand
Can’t touch the bottom
Because there is no bottom
There’s only the
Swishhh, Swiiiirl, swooorl,
Swuuurl Swaaarl, sweerl
That goes and goes and goes and goes
With a graceful gait in every stride
Blue, it’s always the lazy, easy, stretch of tongue
It’s the carefree brush of a paintbrush
Sliding against the crosshatched surface
Of a canvas
It’s the slow droop of an eyelid
As the drowsiness settles in
It’s the slow curve of my hand
As it turns on a page
Blue is a poem
Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.
The main idea of this poem is simple: it talks about the qualities of my favourite colour, blue. I thought about why it is so appealing and realized that it is not just because it looks good, but rather because it feels alive to me. To me, looking at the colour of blue involves much more than just eyesight. I can close my eyes and feel the unexpected twists and turns of my mind as the colour brings forth new ideas to my mind. To explain how this colour is the foundation for all my ideas, especially poetry, I used the foundations of words in English: vowels (in the third stanza).
The theme of my poem is about how simple things, like a mere shade of colour, can be a strong basis to build something beautiful, like a poem.
Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.
Whenever I would sit down to write a poem, I would find myself staring down at a blank white page, with no clue as to how to start writing. Sometimes, I would even be overcome with frustration and not return to write for days. When I decided to write this poem, I realized that I did not have to struggle to grasp a complicated topic topic to write about, but instead I could start with an easy idea such as my favourite colour. I closed my eyes, and instead of looking at my favourite colour, I decided to feel and hear it. I gave the colour blue human characteristics and thought of how it would make me feel if it was a person. Keeping these ideas in mind, I was able to build the poem.
Why did you choose to write this poem?
I chose to write this poem because I wanted to realize the importance of how simple things can have a much deeper impact on us than we realize. I wanted to understand why blue is my favourite colour and decided that writing a poem would be the best way to do so, as it would allow me to dig into my feelings.
Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?
A tip that I have is to love your poem and not compare it with anyone else’s poem. This is because our poems are personal and they are close to our heart. They are part of our identity and are ways that we express ourselves. No matter how your poem looks, feels, or sounds, it is beautiful and you should be proud of it because it is an extension of yourself.
