Arise O compatriots! - By: Lolade Alawode

Arise o compatriots!

Nigerians do not obey.

An economy of lineage.

The men in blue with hands covered in red.

Ever so free but convicted.

Arise o compatriots!

A national slavery of jostling,

fleeing this ascribed hardship.

Strangled by the torment of abject penury.

Mediated poverty.

Poverty stemmed from the root of evil- avarice.

A country where there is no middle class,

the Rich, the Poor and the Poorest.

Ever so affluent but so impoverished.

Arise o compatriots!

a democracy for people by the government.

We seek for justice as victimized citizens,

But are killed by those who rule the land.

Perhaps we take pride in the culture,

But what is culture when there is no concord?

Where one can surfeit on chicken, but others can only gnaw on bones?

Ever so wise but so explicitly imprudent.

This poem is about police brutality in my country -Nigeria. It challenges the government and highlight the cumbersome level of overbearing corruption growing in the country. It portray the immorality of our leaders and speaks for the people simultaneously addressing this so called 'democracy'.
