A Seed of Legacy - By: Mehak Tawakley

Modelled by poem “Digging” by Seamus Heaney

On a long night

A query flows to mind.

What seeds did my grandmothers sow?

More than housewives,

Educated wives who shaped their lives,

With knowledge and degrees,

They went out to continue a family legacy.

A legacy passed down the pedigree

Now instilling in me,

The essence of education’s tide

I carry this legacy with pride

As I stride towards

The north star in my journey,

With this guide,

I will keep this seed alive.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

The main idea of my poem revolves around the concept of a family legacy of education, particularly through the women in your family. It highlights how my grandmothers, despite societal expectations, pursued education and passed down this legacy to my siblings and I, emphasizing the value of knowledge and how it shapes our journey. It underscores the importance of education as a powerful tool and a cherished tradition in your family.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I wrote this poem while thinking and reflecting on a tradition dear to me and my family, which is education for women. Education is a core value in my household as we believe it is a powerful tool that opens doors to a bright future. My grandmother's education helped them create their identity and build a community within the family that preached the importance of women’s learning. Their outstanding achievements served as inspiration for me to continue a family tradition that highlights the value of education and how it can lead to a wider, more prosperous world.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I wrote this poem as an assignment for my english class and wanted to produce a work that I knew would hold great meaning to me and drive me to work harder.
