Utopia or Dystopia? - By: Armin Sayeed

The sun goes down,

Cruel dark enter from one side to attack me

And I lost the eventful battle.

Why did I have to be afraid of hate?

Where was Good to save me from Danger

again?

When is evil coming? So I can end the fighting.

Who will stay for me? Or have I really gone mad?

I imagine myself to be a much happier friend.

That will be a wonderful day of victory!

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.:

Whenever I fell into a hole of failure, I felt as if I needed to be saved by someone. Truthfully, it is only I that can bring myself out of this hole after self-actualizing my potential. The only friend remaining by my side is my own self.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.:

This was my draft for my English homework. I changed a bit because the teacher was not a fan of my work and I had to submit it to her standards. However, deep down, I felt that the draft was better than the homework but I never really got the time to amend my work and thoroughly caressing my poem until this opportunity right now. I initially did my work on paper so that every reader could see my handwriting, the style, ultimately the beauty of words written on a piece of paper.

Why did you choose to write this poem?:

The title of my poem is Utopia or Dystopia. The answer truly depends on the readers' interpretation on the ending of the poem, which can reflect their thought process for their lives. To me, the ending was in a Utopian world and I wanted to let everyone know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and you will make yourself happy. The sun does go down, but the moon shines bright because of you.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?:

Writing is a beautiful form of art and if you don't like art, you are missing out!
