The Quiet Wish - By: Gabriella Versteeg

A lifelong question, a whispered plea,
What is this thing they call 'love' to be?
Can I truly feel its tender sway,
Or am I too selfish to light my way?
Will someone love me with the passion true,
That I imagine I extend to you?
Will anyone even pause to like my soul?
Will I ever be the one who makes them whole?
To be chosen first, the primary desire,
To stoke the flames of a mutual fire.
I thought I loved, with a heart sincere,
But he didn't feel the same, that much is clear.
Perhaps I am incapable of being loved at all,
A lonely feeling that receives no call.
Like in a trio of friends, when partners are sought,
Their eyes meet instantly, without a single thought.
They form their bond, a silent, swift design,
As if you're invisible, lost to time.
No thought to include you, no asking for three,
They turn to each other, indifferent to me.
They never check on you, a lonely truth,
Unless you fit the mold of desired youth.
And sometimes even then, they turn away,
Not caring what befalls you day by day.
They do not know you, nor the person inside,
The hidden depths where your true self can hide.
You wish they knew you, wanted you, cared,
Helped you, understood the life you have shared.
Always I wish for my best friend near,
To chase away the doubt and silent fear.
Yet she, too, let me down, just like the rest,
Leaving this heart to stand the ultimate test.
Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.
The loneliness I often feel and how I wish I had people who would stay to make the loneliness leave. How they always overlook me or just act like I don't exist.
Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.
I wrote down how I was feeling in short sentences in different sections. Then I thought about each line how I could deepen it and make it rhyme.
Why did you choose to write this poem?
I need to speak without speaking.
