She Keeps Me Floating - Faylee Goren

Dedicated to my best friends, that you for always being there for me. - Faylee Goren

The teenage years are the oceans of life,

One day the waters are rocky and the tides are high.

One day you feel like you’re drowning,

Like the water’s fighting

Its way into your lungs,

Like you’re

Getting

Too

Tired

To

Swim.

But other days feel like

White sand beaches

Like sun rays kissing your face

Like it takes no effort to stay afloat.

Like paradise.

But there’s one thing

That makes paradise better,

And pain feel a little sweet.

It’s having someone to be close to you

Through it all.

Someone who carries you on their back

When it gets stormy

And you feel like you can’t swim anymore.

Who would hold your hand

As you walk through paradise.

And laugh at it with you,

Because there is no paradise

Like the two of you.

If I didn’t have my person,

I’d be floating away in the

Entirely wrong direction

Because my person is the map home.

My person is my lifeguard.

They are the reward for treading the cold seas

Trying to engulf me.

The reward for fighting to keep my head above water.

Even when it got hard.

If these years are the ocean

My person keeps me floating.

So don’t let go now.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.:

This poem is simply about finding people you support you, who keep you floating when the waters are rocky. You must have faith that you will find people who love you, even when the world feels cold and unwelcoming. Like life is an ocean trying to drown you. The sun will come out again. That rough ocean will start to feel like a beautiful beach. You just have to hold on, keep your head above water. Your people will find you.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.:

I wanted to write something teenagers like me could relate to. A few years ago, I thought I'd never find true friends, I thought I didn't deserve them. But then, I found two beautiful people who love me like family. Who I love more than life. These people are my reward for keeping my head above water. For trying, hoping, and praying. I wrote this poem as a little token if my gratitude for these kind, wonderful people i'm grateful to call my friends.

Why did you choose to write this poem?: I wrote this poem to show my friends how much they mean to me. I wanted to use something I love (poetry) to express to people I love (my best friends) how much i appreciate them.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?:

Don't give up. You will find people who make you feel like you deserve the best. You will find people who stay and talk to you after the bell rings. You will find people who feel like home. Keep searching for them.
