It's Only Right to Say Goodbye - By: Shiroman Deen Anton

They say light shines when you seek

My heart shined at you at every peek

As much as I wanted to reach the beautiful blue sky,

I knew it was far beyond my streak.

There I was as I admired you, yet I knew you would be gone

like the blue sky that presumes its elegance shall come to a bleak.

When the sky is at its peak, I will reach for you.

When the sky is dark, ill be there to get you

through. No matter where we are, I know I can look up

to you.

But for now, I ache as my heart describes it as ocean waves crashing

For now, I lie down as my body describes it like sunflowers that already miss their sunlight

For now, I visualize, as my mind describes it,

as moths of flame flashing.

I just can't say goodbye, but deep down, I know It's only right to say goodbye…

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.:

The poem is supposed to be a romantic goodbye with the sky as a double metaphor for a woman whom a man once loved. Also a metaphor for life itself (its ups and downs). The man, under certain circumstances, couldn’t get to “her” although he admired her (just as we admire the skies, yet we can't really reach and touch it; it's to be admired from a distance). So despite him trying, he has to leave her hence this dear goodbye poem.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.:

We often fall in love with people for who they are. We admire them from the bottom of our hearts. But for many reasons, we know that we cannot love them as much as the heart desires. And what we tend to do is admire them from a distance, like how we do with the beautiful sky we share. They are the sky we admire in this poem.

Why did you choose to write this poem?:

Love is the strongest energy force in this universe. I've learned to love more and give more than I receive on my spiritual journey. But at the same time, learning to let go in hopes that we lay in peace. This poem is an act of kindness from my heart and a lesson to let go.

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?

Writing is a beautiful way to express ourselves. It's a way to bridge our minds and heart. Listen to your heart more often and express that in the true form of writing. When you do, it can liberate you and even others.
