Carcass - By: Lev Swaffield

laying adjacent to me

is my carcass.

my idle, dormant parts

sway slight with the wind.

within lies my soul

desperate to live,

seething with hope.

the carcass does not move.

it does not open its eyes.

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.

This poem is about being unable to escape depression despite my best efforts. It expresses how it feels to slowly lose yourself and watch as it happens. How it feels to watch yourself rot from your illness. How depression can be so crushing, it can make you feel like you are no longer alive, or that a part of you has died.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.

I wrote this poem during a very dark period of depression. I remember laying in bed one evening and feeling like I was split in two, one part of myself watching and observing, and the other laying still (my carcass). My depression was so severe that I no longer felt alive. I wanted to convey this feeling through poetry.

Why did you choose to write this poem?

I wrote this poem to express how, despite my hope and want to get better, I felt I could not continue. How my depression made me feel like a shell of a person, like a carcass.
