Alzheimer's - By: Zeemal Ayyaz

She spent her days locked up in her room

That held nothing but gloom

All she could do was sit by the window

And watch the sun rise and set

She felt her life fading away

Leaving her memories in disarray

She had started feeling onerous

As her mother struggled to find an exorcist

And her father started to hide his face

A mind once full of dreams and hope

Now found it hard to cope

She would stare at the stars every night

Wishing that they would show her the light

She had lost all her friends

Before she could try and make amends

Everyone would cry and say

“Oh lord what evil has consumed this soul”

But only if they knew

That she was more than just a screw

If only they had understood her pain

She wouldn't have been sobbing alone in the rain

She struggled to find that evil foe

Who had inflicted this tale of woe

She had been defamed in the village

For she was called the “possessed witch”

But only if they knew the reality their minds would switch

She would plead to death everyday

To come and take her far away

Somewhere she could start life anew

Please give a detailed explanation about the meaning and main idea of this poem.: Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia. In this disease the affected begins with mild memory loss which slowly progresses to the loss of ability to carry on a conversation and respond to an environment . The main idea of this poem is how a girl struggles with this disease. She lives in a remote area where people are not aware of these diseases . Due to this she is accused of being possessed and her mother who is also illiterate looks for exorcists to cure her daughter. Her father also ashamed at the fate of her daughter hides his face and locks her in a room . This poem talks about the different challenges she has to face the most difficult one being her own mind.

Please explain your writing and thought process regarding this poem.: At first it was hard to come up with the right words to explain this disease as a poem. I spent many hours struggling just to find the right wording and sequence. Finally i found out what i was failing to do . Then i imagined myself as a girl in a remote area who has been affected by this disease. By doing this as i said below i could feel every emotion the girl in the poem must be feeling . Due to this i instantly found the words i was looking for . It was as if they just popped into my mind out of nowhere

Why did you choose to write this poem?: They are over 10 million cases of dementia and Alzheimer's in a year . Due to this i wanted to put myself in the place of someone who actually has Alzheimer's. By doing this i actually felt all the emotions one would feel due to this disease . So then i decided that i would publish this poem and bring more attention to this disease as they are millions of people still unaware about thisHow

Do you have any tips or anything to share with the youth writers who may be reading this?: I encourage the one who's reading this poem to search about the Alzheimer's disease first so they know the symptoms and what they're actually reading about
